I’m a mum of 2 and so I can write about this topic. I was no different to other new mums-to-be when I was pregnant with my first. I went shopping like crazy and was sucked into the massive world of (unnecessary and totally impractical!) baby products. In hindsight and now with many years of experience under my belt, I know whats a necessity and what is just a gimmick – a nappy bag is a necessity – whether it be an actual nappy bag or a bag of some sort which holds nappies and other baby stuff – you need something to carry around. When I was looking for one, I found the ones at the baby shops here in Australia really ugly and tacky and a complete rip off!! Needless to say, I ended up buying one from overseas online for a great price…
So here are some of my picks on where you can get some stylish AND practical ones (stylish by my standards so it’s totally subjective!)
Le SportSac is a great brand when it comes to practicality and ease of use. All their bags are nylon and very very light. They also have a dozen or so different prints you can pick so there should be something for everyone! The Ryan Baby bag is a new version of the one I ended up picking for my first daughter. It has side pockets for bottles, padded change mat in the same print, pockets inside and out as well as detachable should strap. Most importantly it’s nylon so any spills can be easily cleaned up with a wipe and no need to be precious about the bag! It retails for $138 in the US – you can purchase it here at DFS Galleria Sydney or buy from the US and have it sent over (let me know if you need a parcel forwarding service – I know a great one and will post it under Online Shopping Tips soon). If you do plan to buy from here, also pick up some small cosmetic pouches (see below) which are great for storing dummies, bandaids, wipes, hair clips and all other baby/toddler things you need to carry around!
So when I was pregnant with my first, Storksak was all the rage as Angelina Jolie was carrying it blah blah blah. And yes, whilst it is good quality and carried by a celebrity, I personally don’t see the point of paying $350 for a leather bag which serves as a baby bag. Baby bags need to be light, functional and one that you can just chuck around and get messy without worrying about ruining the bag. So whilst Storksak might have leather bags which serve as work bags also, I don’t like any of those but would much rather the water repellent nylon tote which has all the standard Storksak features such as insulated bottle holder and padded change mat.
Now of course, all the good styles are only available in the US and the Australia site is quite limited in the range. This particular tote is only available on the US and UK site so you will need a parcel forwarding site or you can purchase it from Saks or Bloomies and pay for shipping. BUT given the strength of the AUD against the UK Pound in recent times, it’s actually cheaper to buy it from the UK site and have it shipped over. You’ll get a decent saving over the US prices.
If you do want to spend a decent amount of money, i.e. over $300, there’s an even bigger range of choices….
Stylish yet practical and comes in different colours. Features include 4 outer pockets, change pad, detachable straps and of course nylon exterior for easy clean. If you buy from Shopbop, it’ll be free shipping to Australia. If you can wait until they have their annual friends & family promotion, you can get 20% off.
Cute, colourful and you can definitely use this beyond a nappy bag – beach bag, going shopping, weekend lunch, etc. It can become such a versatile bag. You can buy this from either Saks or Neiman Marcus which both ship to Australia but Saks offers better shipping deal. Also, if you can hold out for their family and friends or other deals, you can save 10% or more. It comes with change pad, nylon interior for easy clean and stroller clips. Only downside is that it is an open top with only a clasp to close so things may tip out.
This is such a cute bag and isn’t as wide as the above ones. Its a little more vertical type of bag with 7 outer pockets (!!), 3 interior pockets, detachable strap and of course nylon exterior. Love the red colour or you can standard black also. Buy from Shopbop for free shipping.
If you want to go and spend even more money, then think Gucci, Burberry, Prada, etc and you’ll be spending about $900+ but really, is that necessary for a nappy bag?
If you have kids that are older, then you have more options. If your kids don’t need as frequent nappy change, are eating ‘normal’ food and are no longer drinking from bottles, then you don’t needs to carry as much – a couple of nappies, wipes, sippy cup, change of clothes, maybe a light blanket or muslin wrap. You can buy a normal handbag which is large enough to carry all of the above plus your stuff but yet is not too precious and can handle spillage, dirty and other grotty stuff your kids will manage to accumulate on them. I use a Lonchamp Le Pilage bag and have so for 3+ years and is still going strong. Here are some of my suggestions…
Can I just emphasize that ALL these bag can be used for everyday use once the kids are older and will last you a LONG time given the quality of these bags – and this is speaking from experience. Contact me if you have any questions or would like to know what the best way of purchasing any of these bags is.
Happy smart shopping!
